Academic Commons At Gerstacker

Client: SVSU Tutoring Center

Project detail

Problem

The Academic Commons at Gerstacker needed to differentiate itself from other SVSU academic resources, such as the library, while increasing student engagement with tutoring services. Students were hesitant to approach the center due to concerns about being judged, creating a barrier to participation. The client required a visual identity and marketing approach that felt welcoming, approachable, and distinct, supported by insight into student perceptions of the center.

Solution

A marketing survey was conducted to assess student attitudes and inform both messaging and content strategy. Based on these findings, a primary logo for the Gerstacker Academic Commons was developed alongside three secondary logos representing each center, ensuring consistency while maintaining visual distinction. A comprehensive brand guidelines booklet was created to define logo usage and visual standards. Social media content and short-form video were designed for a six-month period targeting college students ages 18–25, using scrapbook-inspired textures and organic linework to maintain an approachable, non-institutional tone.

Results

The project resulted in a cohesive logo and brand identity system that aligns with SVSU brand standards while establishing a distinct presence for the Academic Commons. The accompanying static social media content supports student engagement and visual interest across one academic year, reinforcing the center’s approachable and student-centered positioning.
